I restrung my Les Paul. With a Bigsby. Even with two capos and the tool kit my Telecaster came with, which includes a string winder, it was a pain.

For those not in the know, Bigsby vibratos have these little pins the ball end of the string is supposed to hang on to. Pre bending the end of the string does not help much, so I used one capo to keep tension on it. And another capo at the nut end to keep tension on the tuner so it winds cleanly.

Even though I bought it new, Sam Ash had for some reason replaced the strings with cheap D’Addario strings that were too heavy, starting to corrode, and sloppily wound around the tuner. Plus the multicolored D’Addario ends look nasty and make it look like you can’t tell the strings apart.

Nice, I’ve always loved goldtops!

How well does the bigsby stay in tune?

Surprisingly well once the strings are a bit broken in. But I honestly don’t use it for anything more than a novelty on this or my Gretsch. It just looks awesome in that classic 50s way on the goldtop and the Gretsch would be naked without one. I blocked the vibrato on my Stratocaster.

Interesting system on the vibrato. That’s pretty cool.

Yeah, bigsbys are really just for little chord shimmers anyway. I’m sure some of that graphite nut sauce would help if you don’t use it already.

Thanks. Definitely gotta have them on a goldtop. LP Standard, Custom, or ES LP I gotta go with a Humbucker.

Telecaster army reporting in. Strings are wound terribly sorry.

Kinja'd!!!

You’ve also just reminded me that I have an SG sitting in a case in my garage that hasn’t been played in 5 years after a tuner broke and I’ve been too damn lazy to track down a new one to fix it. I should probably get on that. Those vibratos are cool as hell, but I’m not a good enough player to deal with one. And your Telecaster came with a tool kit? What kind of sorcery is this?

Get on that SG! Tuner replacement is probably one of the easiest repairs, and defintely easier than doing a set up. Unless it’s some vintage piece, I wouldn’t worry about finding a correct replacement for the one. Hell, even if it is a vintage one, get a whole new set and keep the originals. Just be sure the holes line up. The tool kit is custom shop sorcery. Straight edge with set up specs/dimensions etched in, feeler gauges, string winder, capo, screwdriver, side cutters, allen wrenches, and deep well nut driver. I was very impressed with all the CS case candy.

Yeah my tele was just something on the rack at local music store. One day when I’m rich maybe I’ll do CS. So here’s the SG out of the case for the first time in years. It’s just a 90's Special - clearly not a collectible and it is a total beater. Could use a complete repaint TBH but the scratches do give it character. G tuner peg is not there. The matching tuners have been a bit hard to find... Maybe I should just do a complete set of all-metal ones. It is also missing the springs for the neck pickup so it just rattles around in there. I don’t even know where to start with finding those. At some point too I’d like to get some plain knobs 3D printed and wrap them in carbon fiber to match the other pieces.
